Gum Recession and Treatments

Gum Recession and Treatments
Gum recession may occur due to reasons such as progression of gum disease, trauma or ill-fitting dentures. Correct diagnosis and early intervention are of great importance to prevent further loss of teeth and surrounding tissues.
What is Gum Recession?
Gum recession is the condition in which the gums lose their normal level or thickness for various reasons and fall below the limit they should be. This indicates tissue loss around the teeth and causes the teeth to appear longer than normal. It can cause difficulty in oral hygiene and tooth loss if left untreated. Therefore, it should be diagnosed and treated as early as possible.
What Causes Gum Receding?
The main cause of gum recession is usually inadequate oral hygiene. As a result of the change in the bacterial flora in the mouth and the proliferation of bacteria, gum diseases develop and lead to recession. Other causes include:
- Presence of dental tartar.
- Crooked teeth.
- Ill-fitting dentures and fillings.
- Traumas.
- Nutritional disorders and vitamin deficiencies.
- Saliva structure and genetic factors.
- Long-term use of certain medications.
- Systemic diseases are included.
- Receding Gum Treatments.
Before treatment, the factors that cause withdrawal are determined. In the first stage:
- Tartar cleaning and root surface smoothing procedures are performed.
- Incompatible dentures and fillings are corrected.
- If necessary, crooked teeth and malocclusions are corrected.
- To regain lost tissues.
Free Gum Graft: The superficial epithelial tissue taken from the palate is fixed to the required area with thin sutures and the width of the gum is increased.
Connective Tissue Graft: Connective tissue is taken from the palate and placed in the area where there is a recession. It has high aesthetic compatibility and provides rapid healing of the palate.
Tunnel (Pouch) Technique: Grafts are placed in a minimally invasive manner without damaging the gums between the teeth. Many teeth can be treated at the same time.
