Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are teeth that erupt into the mouth usually between the ages of 16 and 25. They are the last teeth to join the oral environment, so existing late eruption and genetic disorders may lead to the decision to extract wisdom teeth.
Why Should Wisdom Teeth Be Removed?
To decide on the extraction of wisdom teeth, dental x-rays and detailed x-rays of the jaw bones and jaw nerves may be required. In some cases, emergency extraction may be recommended. The following reasons may influence the decision to extract wisdom teeth:
Susceptibility to decay due to their location in a difficult-to-clean area of the mouth,
In people with a genetically narrow jaw structure, wisdom teeth cause infection in the gums and bones due to half eruption,
Deterioration of oral health as a result of being completely embedded or positioned outside the chewing line,
The decision of the specialist orthodontist depending on the treatment plan during orthodontic treatments,
It causes crowding by putting pressure on other fully erupted teeth,
Causing tissue loss in healthy teeth by applying pressure on neighboring molars,
Pressure on the nerves responsible for the sensation and function of the jaws,
Extraction of wisdom teeth can also be decided for reasons such as detection of food entrapment and gingival infections.
When Should Wisdom Tooth Extraction Be Performed?
Many factors play a role in the decision to extract wisdom teeth. These teeth, which are normally expected to erupt between the ages of 16-25, may be naturally missing in some people. The eruption age may vary according to the development of the person, oral and maxillofacial structural features and genetic status. Wisdom tooth extraction can be safely performed by evaluating these conditions and the patient’s systemic health. Wisdom teeth extraction can be performed by oral surgeons from the age of 15 with regular controls.
How Can Wisdom Tooth Extraction Be Performed?
After being informed about the procedure, regional anesthesia is provided. Depending on the position of the wisdom teeth in the jawbone, some gum tissue or bone tissue may be removed from the area. After the bone and gums are cleaned and organized with the help of special hand tools, a few stitches are placed in the area to speed up the healing process and the tissues are closed again.
Can Wisdom Tooth Extraction be Performed with Conscious Sedation?
As with other tooth extractions and dental procedures, wisdom tooth extractions can be performed comfortably with conscious sedation. This method, which is frequently applied in oral and dental health treatments, can be safely applied in adults who develop fear, anxiety and nausea, thus allowing patients to have a comfortable treatment process that they will not feel or remember.
What Should Be Considered After Wisdom Tooth Extraction?
It is important to prevent the formation of edema in the tissues with the help of ice compresses provided in the clinic immediately after the extraction of the wisdom tooth, and it is recommended that this process continues for the following 24 hours.
The healing process will be supported by the tampons applied to the area immediately after the procedure, and bleeding can thus be controlled.
Regular use of prescribed medications will prevent pain and swelling.
Foods consumed after the treatment should be cold, and care should be taken to reduce food intake in the later hours. Additionally, it is recommended to avoid spicy and acidic foods that may cause pain in the area.
Factors such as smoking and alcohol, which can negatively affect regional blood flow and healing, should be restricted during the post-extraction period. Special attention should be paid to the first few days.
Situations that cause pressure changes, such as mouth rinsing, spitting, and air travel, should be avoided for the next few days.
The cleanliness of the extraction site is explained in detail to the patient by the surgeons immediately after the extraction, along with recommendations. The prescribed agents are explained, and if necessary, stitches can be removed approximately one week later; tissue healing will also be checked by the surgeon during this first follow-up. Thus, this process is carried out in a controlled and healthy manner together with the doctor and the patient.
What are Non-Prep Laminates (Prepless Veneers)?
Porcelain veneers are known as prepless laminates or non-prep laminates. They can be applied to healthy dental tissues without making any changes to the tooth surfaces. These applications cover only the front surface of the teeth and are preferred due to their very natural and aesthetic appearance. They provide excellent results in closing gaps in teeth, correcting color and shape irregularities, and completing smile design. Porcelain veneers are custom-made for individuals and can be applied to tooth surfaces using compatible materials without damaging the teeth.
Are Uncut Laminates and Lamina Veneers Different?
Both applications allow for the aesthetic laminates to be applied to the front surface of the teeth, while in prepless veneers, there is no need for any abrasion on the teeth before the application. Porcelain veneers are applied directly to the tooth surface and can be removed if desired, restoring the original appearance. However, laminate veneers require preparation before application, so a small amount of abrasion is done on the tooth surface before they are applied, and if removed, a new restoration must be made. Since the procedure time and sessions are shorter for prepless veneers, smile design can be completed in a shorter time.
How to Apply Uncut Laminate?
During the clinical examination, teeth requiring treatment are identified. Oral health and the compatibility of surrounding tissues are examined, and digital measurements are taken using three-dimensional scanners. Photographs and X-rays are also taken to check all personal parameters such as age, gender, face shape, and skin color, and the most ideal smile design is determined in a computer environment. The simulation of the final appearance is reviewed with dentists before the procedure, and the measurements are transferred to the laboratory in a digital format. In the next session, the crowns are first tried on and then applied to the front surface of the teeth using biocompatible adhesives that do not harm the teeth.
What Should Be Known After Applying Non-Prep Veneers?
Thanks to their ease of application and compatible structures, patients can return to their social life immediately after the procedure. No sensitivity or pain is observed. There is no need to change the usual brushing and flossing practices in oral care. Since the tissue transitions of prepless veneers are very natural and highly compatible with surrounding tissues, oral and dental hygiene can be easily maintained. Regular attendance to check-up appointments and proper maintenance of the restorations increase the lifespan of these prosthetics.
